Your Post-Op Checklist

Your Post-Op Checklist

1. Keep Your Head Elevated

Always keep your head elevated, including during sleep. Use extra pillows or a wedge pillow to prop yourself up—this helps reduce swelling and prevent fluid buildup around the eyes.

2. Avoid Straining or Heavy Activity

For the first two weeks, avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, or engaging in strenuous activity. Raising your blood pressure too early can increase swelling and bruising around the eyes.

3. Use Cold Compresses

Apply cold compresses for 10-minute intervals (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) during the first 48 hours. This helps reduce swelling and discomfort. Never place ice directly on the skin—wrap the compress in a clean, soft cloth.

4. Clean the Incisions Gently

Keep the incision sites clean and dry. You may be given a sterile saline solution or ointment—use it as directed. Avoid rubbing your eyes or using harsh skincare products on the area.

5. Take Medications as Prescribed

Use prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter options as recommended. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking any medication that causes drowsiness.

6. Avoid Rubbing or Touching Your Eyes

Your eyes may feel itchy or watery—this is normal. However, avoid rubbing, tugging, or touching the eyelids, as this can interfere with healing.

7. Skip Makeup and Contacts

Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses for at least 2 weeks or until your provider gives you the all-clear. These can irritate healing tissue or introduce bacteria.

8. No Smoking or Secondhand Smoke

Smoking slows healing and increases the risk of complications. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke for at least 2 weeks before and after surgery.

9. Limit Screen Time

Try to avoid prolonged screen use (phones, computers, TV) in the first few days. Excessive screen time can strain your eyes and delay healing.

10. Protect Eyes from the Sun

Your eyelid skin will be extra sensitive after surgery. Avoid sun exposure, wear sunglasses with UV protection, and apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) around—but not directly on—your incisions once cleared to do so.

11. Follow a Nutritious Diet

Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean protein to support healing. Limit salt to reduce puffiness.

12. Attend Follow-Up Appointments

Be sure to keep all follow-up appointments so we can monitor your healing progress and address any concerns. Stitches may be removed during these visits, depending on your procedure.
